این کتاب محتوی شرح مشاهدات او در ایران است. براون از راه ترکیه وارد ایران شده و بعد از عبور از تبریز و تهران و اصفهان، به شیراز و یزد و کرمان رفته و سپس از آنجا به تهران مراجعت نموده و از راه مازندران و بندر مشهد سر از ایران خارج شده است.
در این سیاحتنامه، نویسنده بیشتر به روحیۀ هموطنان ما توجه دارد و چون یک مرد سیاح، خصوصاً اگر دانشمند باشد، می خواهد از هر چیزی مستحضر گردد، ادوارد براون هنگام مسافرت به ایران با فرق مختلف تماس گرفته و صحبت کرده است.
مطالعاتی در خصوص وضع زندگی و اخلاق و روحیات ملت ایران آنچه در طی مدت دوازده ماهاقامت درایران از سال 1887 تا سال 1888 استنباط شده است به ضمیمه شرح حال پرفسور ادوارد براون استاد دانشگاه کمبریج.محتوای کتاب بسیار غنی تر از خاطرات معمولی یک سفر است و از حدود سفرنامه های عادی فراتر می رود.
این کتاب علاوه بر معرفی دقیق و ارائه ی تصویری زنده از سرزمین و مردم ایران، در واقع راهنمای مطمئن و مرجع موثق ادبیات و تفکر جدید ایران است و به همین دلیل شایسته است که در کتابخانه ی اهل تحقیق، در کنار دیگر اثر ماندگار مولف تاریخ ادبیات ایران جای گیرد.
